A rationalist outlook, or system of thought, attaching prime importance to human, rather than divine, or supernatural matters.
This description sounds a tad archaic with its talk of ‘supernatural’, and ‘divine’, and that’s because it’s origins can be traced back to the sixth century BCE, with pre-Socratic Greek philosophy. Today the word humanism is synonymous with philanthropy, however, at the end of 2015 we still find ourselves with the ‘supernatural’ and ‘divine’ to exorcise from its meaning.
One could probably blather on about the history and etymology for the next month or so, and maybe one day I will, but for now, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of this post.
Upon the reflection of my first year as a blogger, I found the majority of my posts were leaning more towards that of tackling the issues of the day, rather than with the growing pains of parenthood, as you would expect from a parent blogger. Whether it be trying to raise money and awareness of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). My thoughts on secular schooling of our children, in the wake of the Trojan Horse scandal in Britain’s state schools. Trying to dispel the stigma of mental health problems. The plight of secular humanist bloggers in the 21st century, or talking about gender equality. With this realisation, I decided to go ‘All In,’ and put my chips on humanism, and start a new project.
So…here we are…The river is down, and it’s time to show my cards; to lay out my stall; to put on the dog and pony show as it were.
Along with the posts from your humble narrator, my plan for this site is to create a community magazine, where bloggers such as yourselves can post your latest work, highlighting the issues that matter to you, and that we can all come together to effect change upon this world.
Each week, I plan on hosting a ‘Link-Up’, so that we can all share our latest posts with the community. Be it highlighting the plight of war torn areas, or the affects of climate change; to your charitable marathons, and movember attempts. Whether you blog independently for an established publication, or you are the new kid on the block, all are welcome here, because ‘you’ are the Humanist Blogger.
So there you have it. Are you interested in joining this community? Are you interested in coming together to make this little blue/green speck of dust we inhabit a better place? If so, come and join us, and make this magazine your home from home.
Mi casa es su casa.
